Millions of America's Children are Abused, Neglected and Killed

Over 3 million American children are abused or neglected annually; in 2006 over 1,500 children died as a result. To put this devastating statistic into perspective for the American people, the same number of U.S. soldiers (1,500) died in Iraq from 2004 to 2005, according to research published by the Foreign Policy Research Institute in 2005.

These horrific child abuse and neglect facts do not get enough public attention, despite the shameful picture they paint of America. The victims, the American children deserve better. The statistics below are shocking, and clearly demand the nation's attention. America this is a call to action, to unite around this crisis and come to the aid of the children.

Child Abuse and Fatality in America
- 3.6 million children received investigation for abuse and neglect in 2006.
- An estimated 1,530 children died in 2006 due to child abuse or neglect. Studies in Colorado and North Carolina reveal an estimated 50 to 60% of fatalities due to abuse and neglect are not reported as such.
- 78% of children killed in 2006 were under 4 years of age.
- 76% of fatalities were caused by one or both parents.
- 43% of fatalities were white children; 29% were african-american;17% other.
- A reported 2,827 children and teens died from gun violence, between the years 2003-2006 which is more than the number of fighting American men and women killed in hostile action in Iraq in the three years from 2003 to April 2006 (CDF, 2006).
